5 Ways to Explore the Path Not Taken
We’ve all wondered, “What if I had chosen a different path?” This curiosity is part of the human experience, especially when it comes to our careers. Maybe you’ve found success, but every now and then, you wonder what might have happened if you’d pursued something different. This feeling—this curiosity about the path not taken—is often a signal that your professional journey may be ready for a shift or expansion.
As a career and executive coach, I’ve guided countless individuals through this process of curiosity, self-discovery, and growth. Here are five key signs it’s time to explore that path—and how to start:
1. Listen to the Whisper of “What If?”
That little voice that says “what if” is more than just daydreaming. It’s your mind nudging you to reassess your priorities. Whether you’ve noticed it while watching someone thrive in a completely different field or by catching yourself fantasizing about a new role, this curiosity could be the key to unlocking unexplored potential.
Practical Step: Write down the careers or industries you daydream about. What attracts you to them? Start researching or speaking to people in those fields.
2. Assess Talents and Skills You’ve Yet to Explore
Our careers often narrow our focus to a set of core competencies, leaving some talents untouched. The path not taken is often filled with undiscovered skills that could lead to even greater success.
Practical Step: As a certified Clifton Strengths coach, I’d recommend that you take the Clifton Strengths assessment to better understand your innate talents and how you can leverage them as strengths. Take stock of skills or interests you’ve yet to fully explore. Could these be leveraged in your current role or a new one?
3. Recognize the Spark of Curiosity
If you find yourself consumed with interest in a different field or industry, this natural curiosity could signal a desire for growth or change in your professional life.
Practical Step: Identify trends in what captivates you. Is there a recurring theme in the content you consume? Seek out mentors or professional development in those areas.
4. Reframe Uncertainty as Growth
Exploring new possibilities can be daunting, but uncertainty often leads to the most rewarding outcomes. Transitioning into something unfamiliar doesn’t mean abandoning what you’ve built—it means expanding it.
Practical Step: Start small. Pursue a side project or upskill in an area that interests you. The first step doesn’t have to be a major leap—it can be an intentional move toward new growth.
5. Seek Guidance for Your Transition
You don’t have to explore this path alone. Finding a coach, mentor, or support network can be instrumental in turning this curiosity into action.
Practical Step: Consider investing in coaching that supports career transitions. With a tailored approach, I’ll help you unlock your potential, navigate career shifts, and take bold steps forward.
