Many people grapple with this question: should I share my goals or keep them secret until they materialize? This debate has sparked endless discussions among psychologists, self-help gurus, and high achievers. Some claim that sharing goals fosters accountability and social support, while others say keeping goals private boosts motivation and success rates. Let’s delve into both perspectives.

Advantages of Sharing Goals

Proponents of sharing goals believe in the power of accountability and social support. Vocalizing aspirations to friends, family, or mentors can enlist their support and encouragement, creating a network of accountability partners invested in our success. Sharing goals also fosters commitment, making us feel more obligated to follow through once our intentions are public.

Sharing goals can foster collaboration and networking opportunities. By broadcasting our intentions, we may attract like-minded individuals who share similar aspirations or possess complementary skills, leading to potential partnerships and new opportunities. Additionally, feedback and advice from others can provide valuable insights that clarify and enrich our goals.

Advantages of Keeping Goals Private

Advocates of keeping goals private argue that secrecy breeds success. While I am not sure I agree with this, research in psychology suggests that sharing goals prematurely can create a premature sense of accomplishment, leading to decreased motivation. When we receive praise for merely articulating our goals, we may subconsciously lower our drive to pursue them vigorously.

Keeping goals private shields them from external judgment and scrutiny, allowing us to work on them free from others’ opinions or expectations. In a world full of social comparison, maintaining privacy around our goals preserves their authenticity, safeguarding them from potential derailment. Withholding goals enhances intrinsic motivation. Pursuing our aspirations quietly cultivates a deep sense of ownership and autonomy. The absence of external validation allows us to derive fulfillment from the intrinsic joy of progress and self-improvement.

Conclusion

The key lies in introspection and self-awareness—knowing when to seek support and when to work solo. For some, sharing goals may serve as motivation and accountability. That’s me! 🙋When I share my goals, I find people willing to help me and I progress quicker than executing in secret.

I’ve had more supporters of my goals than detractors, which might be due to who I share my goals with. Ultimately, whether you share your goals or not may hinge on your mindset and support network. Whether you choose to share your goals with the world or keep them close, remember the journey towards success doesn’t have to be lonely.
